What makes a town a"shithole"?

It's a term that's bandied about too often, in my opinion.
I mean... what do you want/need from a town?
Anywhere with a big supermarket, a chip shop and a couple of decent pubs is ALRIGHT.
There are not many places that are proper shitholes.
HINCKLEY is a shithole.
It's got some pubs, but they're all horrible and full of cunts, so that makes Hinckley a shithole.
I am in Cowdenbeath at the moment.
There's a Morrison's, a chippy, a takeaway Indian and 4 old school little pubs that sell HEAVY.
I like Cowdenbeath.
Cowdenbeath is GOOD.

Anyone remember the Crap Towns book from The Idler website?
This was their top 10 back in 2003. Some of the descriptions on the website were funny as fuck.

Paris is full of homeless/beggars and has parts which are worse than anywhere in London.
Love the city (only been twice) but definitely has a lot of contrasts and a rough edge. The French in general seem to hate it.

Was in Hastings last month for the first time in many moons and was quite impressed with the old town, despite other parts of the town being run down, I thought it compared quite well to many other south coast seaside towns.
Also visited Bexhill which was a bit like the land that ime forgot but to be fair was clean enough and boasted enough pubs to while away a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Eastbourne is becoming more of a shithole each time I visit druggies beggars & scousers everywhere.
Bognor a bit like a smaller Eastbourne but benefits from the Butlins money to keep it ticking over
.
Margate worse than Eastbourne full of Asylum seekers benefit tourists and daytrippers from South London also shit pubs.
Southend also a bit of a khazi but at least has a decent pie & mash shop the pier and casino as attractions, one thing that did shock me when I visited a couple of weeks back was the number of rats running about by marine terrace and the slope leading down to the pier and also on the seafront I saw someone eating chips on a bench when one jumped up next to him.

I have no idea what it is called but many a time I've seen and unfortunately had to smell some of the stuff the cleaners heat up for grub.
Some kind of rancid vinegary smell. Definitely an acquired taste. Maybe fish in the dish as well but hard to discern what the actual ingredients might be due to the most unappetising stink going that hangs in the air. Does anyone know what this food is called?

Is that your hobby, tle, collecting kids from the far east? I guess HMOs make ideal bolt-holes for you in that respect as nobody has any idea who their cohabiters are or what they do.
If you're looking to monetize your hobby, then no point looking at me I like neither kids or HMOs, but good luck with your venture, the country will need entrepreneurs such as yourself to pull through.

Paris tends to have those dachshund shaped stencil on the pavement pointing towards the curb to urge you to make your dog defecate in the gutter.

Any shops that sell African food, 'Food from the Motherland'. If one appears on your High Street it is a clear a sign that the place has turned/is turning into a crap hole.
